Abstract

New fibre developments in 2002 are reviewed. Dow Fiber Solutions (DFS) was created in September 2002 to develop differentiated fibres within Dow's global Polyolefins and Elastomers portfolio. Dow XLA stretch fibre has resulted in a new generic classification. Development and possibilities are described, particularly heat and chemical resistance. Further developments for Dow's NatureWorks fibre are discussed, including a flame retardant version, technical details of which are provided and its new generic classification. Biobalance polymers are detailed. Elastanes have been developed by RadiciSpandex Corporation with new products specified - Type S 45 high temperature-resistant elastane, and Type S-72. Cellulosics are covered with Tencel finding growing demand and further capacity increase of lyocell in Mobile, USA. Lenzing have expanded operations in Austria. European polypropylene production reached record levels. Chapelthorpe's Fibres Division advances are included. Polyester news came from Zimmer AG's activities in China and India. Reliance Industries, Dewan Salman Fibre, Kosa and UDC also report.
