Abstract

Building codes are a necessary instrument for reducing vulnerability to natural hazards. They should be followed by architects and engineers while designing new buildings or retrofitting existing buildings in hazard-prone areas. They must take into account the nature of building and local social, economic, and geographical context Effective implementation of building codes requires good institutional structure and training of engineers as well as contractors and masons, who are responsible for construction.
