Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the development of the Brazilian export economy from independence in 1822 to the eve of the First World War. Absell and Tena-Junguito examine the evolution of the export economy using revised estimates of the export series, including trends in growth, openness and the terms of trade. The study presents estimates of the contribution of exports to the Brazilian economy, examining the direct and indirect effects of the coffee boom during the period. These include an estimation of the retained value and purchasing power of exports, as well as the forward and backward linkages and externalities associated with the sector's development.
