Abstract

General procedure for stereo image coding is to use disparity compensated prediction methods and code residuals separately. Although the characteristics of stereo residuals are different from those of common images, JPEG-like methods which are applied to monocular images are used frequently and less research has been devoted to residual image coding. The focus of this paper is to make stereo image coding more efficient by speculating the characteristics of the residual image. By measuring the edge tendency of residual image, our method modifies the quantization matrix adaptively using discrete wavelet transform. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
