Abstract

The presence of a goiter in the fetus is an indication of maternal thyroid dysfunction. It carries an increased morbidity and mortality for the fetus and into the neonatal period. Maternal thyroid disease must be monitored closely and medications adjusted throughout pregnancy to prevent adverse outcomes. In females with poorly controlled thyroid disease, sonography is useful in the evaluation of the fetus at risk for goiter. © The Author(s) 2014.
