Abstract
Discusses the effects that automation of materials handling has had on terminal operations. Benefits realised include reduced costs and manpower and also improved product quality and reduced maintenance costs. Modern materials handling systems available from several manufacturers and suppliers are described. These include Voest-Alpine, BHM, and Svedela. Market opportunities are briefly considered.
