INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Ureteral stents are an essential component in modern urology. However they are not without significant side effects. Tamsulosin has been proven to be effective in stent related symmptoms. Tadalafil has recently been proven to be effective in LUTS. We demonstrate the effect od tadalafil in stent related symptoms in comparison with Tamsulosin. METHODS: Prospective, randomized study conducted from January 2015 to March 2017. All patients with double J (DJ) stent inserted post URS/RIRS/PCNL were included. After informed consent patients were randomized to two groups using computer generated block randomization. Patients in group I received tadalafil 10 mg OD; while patients in group II received tamsulosin 0.4 mg OD for the stent related symptoms. All patients were given tramadol 50 mg tablet on demand for pain. All patients were followed up at four weeks by history, ISSQ score, VAS score and total analgesic requirement. RESULTS: Out of 242 patients, 103 patients who met all the inclusion criteria and were willing to participate in the study were randomized into two groups. Group I had 51 patients and group II had 53 patients. II At the end of 4 weeks patients were available in group I and 48 patients were available in group II for analysis. All demographic criteria were comparable in both the groups. There was no differenc - in the ISSQ score, VAS score and the mean analgesic requirement in both the groups. Side effects like headache, dizziness were significantly less in tadalafil group. CONCLUSIONS: Both tamsulosin and tadalafil were equally effective in reliving stent related symptoms. However tadalafil had less side effects compared to tamsulosin.
