Abstract

Hartmann procedure (resection of involved segment, creating a blind distal stump and a proximal end stoma) is typically chosen when the sigmoid requires resection under adverse circumstances. This chapter describes the approach to reverse a Hartmann-type end colostomy once the patient has recovered from the acute event prompting the original surgery. Both open and laparoscopic approaches are described. Details of preoperative preparation, pitfalls, complications, strategy, and technique are included.
