Even where the thermal energy of an aquifer is used to heat only a single family low-energy home, the temperature of the aquifer is substantially affected beyond its property boundaries (temperature anomaly). This implies that thermal usage in neighbouring areas becomes limited or even impossible. This study shows that such temperature anomalies tend to limit substantially the utilisable geothermal potential, especially in densely populated areas. In a closely packed housing development with well heat-insulated single-family homes, for example, only 10 % of the heating requirements can be met by utilising the thermal energy of the groundwater. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
