Rice provides a favourable environment for the exploitation of fungi as mycoinsecticides, but this potential has yet to be realised. In this paper, the authors provide an outline for a rational programme of strain selection, using examples for studies on Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae as pathogens of Nephotettix virescens and Nilaparvata lugens.
