On the basis of L. Wittgenstein's observations on magic and religious belief, the article carries out a critical analysis of the idea that religious beliefs, like empirical ones, have to do with matters of fact; thus understood, they would be superstitions, according to Wittgenstein. The paper also examines alternative manners of understanding religious belief by relating it to the practice and way of life of the believer, in order to point out some problematic issues.
