At present there are more than sixteen different material systems being actively investigated for potential low cost thin film solar cells. A systematic procedure is described herein to analyze the potential of each of these materials for energy conversion efficiency. The solar cell is separated into its five constituent layers to provide a common basis for the development of these methodologies.
