Abstract

Most motor vehicles need a transmission, since the speed requirements of the wheels are different from those of the engine. This is particularly true when the engine is a reciprocating internal combustion engine: in this case the transmission includes a start-up device (either clutch or torque converter), a variable ratio gearbox and the final drive and differential, which operates the wheel by means of shafts and joints.
