Abstract

The number of dialysis patients in Europe has been increasing steadily. There are about 61000 dialysis patients alone in Germany. The need for dialysis arises because of acute or chronic kidney failure or severe kidney damage. The blood exchange is mostly accomplished with dialysis catheters especially during sudden chronic kidney failure. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering.
