Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss on how an industrial Ethernet protocol, namely EtherNet/IP, can be integrated to IEC 61499 communication function blocks. This conglomerate enables a robust communication infrastructure for distributed control systems as well as a certain interface to existing facilities in terms of retrofitting. The functional definition of the required IEC 61499 communication function blocks rely on results of an analysis on how typical devices interact within an industrial automation and control network. Another focus is centered on the reliable connection establishment, as this demands careful attention within distributed systems. The mechanisms and approaches which are discussed in this paper will are implemented in the open source environments OpENer and 4DIAC. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
