Abstract

Laundry business is growing rapidly, and it cannot be irrespectively from the use of detergent in its application. One of the compounds contained in the detergent is phosphate, which in excess conditions can disrupt the balance of the aquatic ecosystem. It can caused eutrophication. The content of phosphate produced from the waste of laundry business activity that permitted to discharge into water bodies is 0.2 mg/liter. To degrade the phosphate contained in laundry waste, bioadsorbents such as banana stem charcoal would be very useful. The purposes of this research was to study the performance of banana stem charcoal bioadsorbent activated using NaOH and the effect when integrating the factors that affect the process of phosphate diffusion to the active side of the adsorbent, such as the mass of the adsorbent, contact time, and stirring speed. The results showed that the increase in adsorbent mass, contact time, and stirring speed had a positive impact on the performance of bioadsorbents in absorbing phosphate in laundry wastewater. The best condition was obtained at a stirring speed of 600 rpm, adsorbent mass of 5 grams and a contact time of 80 minutes by degradation percentage of phosphate was 80,7%.
