Abstract

Rotterdam is home to 615,000 residents and is situated around 40 km inland on the New Meuse River, which is one of the channels in the North Sea delta formed by the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The city grew around a dam that was constructed in the river Rotte in the thirteenth century. After construction of the New Waterways in 1872, which created a direct connection to the North Sea, the city developed into one of the world's largest ports and the second city of the Netherlands.
