Foreign Training Systems for Dietetics Professionals: Where Japan Stands

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of the training systems adopted by other countries for dietetics professionals and to compare these with the systems used in Japan. Methods: Data on the certifications for dietetics professionals, outlines of professional training systems, and related information (such as the profiles of dietetic associations) were extracted from the homepage of the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) and the English websites of national dietetic associations that are members of the ICDA. Results: (1) Approximately half of the 42 member countries of the ICDA provided information about professional titles or the organizations that awarded the titles. The organizations were varied and included national dietetic associations. (2) Twenty-six countries provided information about the degree that was required for certification. While most countries required a bachelor’s degree or higher, some listed other requirements. (3) Twenty-four countries reported having a practicum program. The three countries that did not meet the ICDA’s international standards of having practicum programs that require at least 500 hours of supervised professional practice were Taiwan, Japan, and France. (4) The education institutions in the United States train 3,000 individuals per year, which is the largest number reported. (5) In most countries, education content consisted of academic knowledge and practice, and spanned from basic science to applied disciplines. Conclusion: Although other countries having different types of training systems for dietetics professionals, it should be noted that the practicum requirements in Japan do not meet international standards.  A more effective training system for dietetics professionals should be created in Japan, and further research should be conducted on the systems used in other countries
