Abstract

The construction industry has gone through radical changes in recent years. Whereas in the past construction firms were simply required to build, they now have to handle every aspect of a construction project, from planning and manufacturing of prefabricated components to the finished structure, its operation and maintenance, repairs, and in some cases even its deconstruction and the ensuing waste management - ensuring the highest quality of work at all stages. Innovations in structural engineering extend from the development of new materials and construction techniques to new financing and operating models. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
