Abstract

The subject is reviewed under the following headings: initial contact; early dissemination; adoption of potato as a food; the potato in Ireland; early concepts of potato breeding; Goodrich's introduction of Rough Purple Chilli; use of Solanum demissum for resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans); systematic germplasm collection; native potato cultivars in modern times; wild potato species; and utilization of exotic germplasm. Information on the composition of the World Collection of Cultivated Species maintained by CIP is listed. The pedigrees of the varieties Alaska Frostless and Rosa are presented.
