Abstract

The establishment of internationally agreed definitions and terminology for subdivisions of the stratigraphical column is a prerequisite for the unambiguous discussion of widespread geological phenomena. This article represents the formal announcement of ratification by IUGS of a number of standard stratigraphical units and boundaries as proposed in 1984 by various bodies of the International Commission on Stratigraphy. -Author
