Abstract

Location update and paging is very important operations for mobility tracking of mobile hosts, but they require much signaling costs. In this paper, we propose an efficient location update scheme based on both the movement direction and distance information of mobile hosts, and also propose a sectional ring paging scheme. In the proposed location update scheme, location areas are determined by both moving direction and distance information of mobile hosts to reduce the total cost required for location management. We evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme by simulation under various conditions and we got an improved performance over existing schemes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
