Abstract

Scintigraphy has provided a unique tool for the noninvasive evaluation of renal pathophysiology, and the past two decades have witnessed a rapid increase in the scope and number of radionuclide renal studies. This chapter is intended to familiarize nuclear medicine physicians with the pathophysiological basis of renal scintigraphy. To this end, a general review of relevant renal physiology and scintigraphic techniques is followed by detailed discussions of specifi c disorders frequently encountered in nuclear medicine. These include renovascular hypertension, urinary tract obstruction, acute pyelonephritis, and renal transplant complications.
