As noted in our Response to Professor Zatsiorsky's previous Letter to the Editor, the various techniques for measuring the total mechanical energy of the body all lead to very similar results (Aleshinsky, 1986; Kaneko, 1990; Willems et al., 1995). Of more interest are the problems (common to all the techniques) such as elastic storage and release of energy, energy transfers between segments, co-contractions by antagonistic muscles and poly-articular muscles, which arise when one tries to determine the muscular work from the mechanical energy.
