The author discusses the different tactics used by science con-artists. According to the author, to develop confidence is the first objective of these con-artists. He cites charisma, smiles, colorful prose as some of the key elements in developing confidence. He points out that the professional quality of publications, as well as media presentations, is one of the subtle ways in which science con-artists deceive people. He contends that credentials of both the publication or lead author are not guarantees for trustworthy science. Another con-artist strategy, the author notes, is creating public doubt amid scientific consensus.
