To find a conceptualization of family business is a requisite to understand the administration of this type of business. In our days, an agreement on the conceptualization of a family business does not exist among the scientific community despite the multiple contributions that have been done (Vallejo, 2005). Moreover, the inexistence of an agreement on what should be understood by family business makes impossible, in some occasions, the comparison of results between different studies and regions (Barroso, Sanguino & Bañegil, 2012). By using a sample consisting of 41 businesses from a municipality in Yucatán, México, the aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the conceptualization, classification and characterization of businesses. The main results regarding conceptualization indicated that the businesses from the municipality are defined by property, management, and degree of participation of relatives in the activities of the business. With respect to concept classification, businesses are mainly focused on onedimensional aspects such as property, management, degree of participation of relatives in the activities of the business, and much less on the aspect of succession. The characterization was obtained as the presence of the family in the business. (English) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
