Some patients with eating disorders use self-induced vomiting as a means of weight control. Self-induced vomiting can lead to a number of serious medical complications, to dental erosion, and to skin signs such as Russell sign (callused fingers, caused by repeated use of the fingers to induce vomiting), swelling of salivary glands (chipmunk cheeks of the bulimic), conjunctival hemorrhages, and petechiae in the skin around the eyes.
