Abstract

The southern Jiangsu Province was located in the fast developing Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. With the development of agriculture and industries, and the speeding-up of China's urbanization, the problems of water pollution had become more and more serious. Chen Xiangbang Ecological Restoration Project integrated the rural domestic sewage treatment system and river restoration projects. By taking advantage of the on-site terrain conditions and ODBP technology, the riverway could be transformed into a domestic sewage treatment system. Experiments showed that the concentration of CODCr, TN, TP, NH3-N and SS in the effluent had met the first class of B standard of "Discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant" (GB-18918-2002).The demonstration project showed that it was very efficient for the rural wastewater treatment of south Jiangsu. It not only saved the investment but also the land resources. For one ton wastewater, the capital construction cost was CNY1876.84, and the treatment cost was only CNY0.085. What's more, the projects do not need professional management. So the Chen Xiangbang Ecological Restoration Projects could widely be used for rural domestic wastewater treatment. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.
