The Atlantic islands are mainly high, and volcanic in origin. The islands of the Mid-Atlantic ridge (Azores, Ascension Island, St. Helena etc.) are typical of this pattern. Notable coastal forms are plunging cliffs and dyke swarms. The Western Atlantic islands (South Georgia, Falklands) may be barren and rugged. The Falklands have numerous rias. The islands of the Eastern Atlantic include the Faroes (indented, fjord like inlets), St. Kilda, Madeira (gravelly beaches, high cliffs) and the Canary Islands. (C.J.U.)
