Abstract

In the last two decades excessive reward seeking behaviors, which meets diagnostic criteria of addiction, have received special attention. Increasing scientific and public interest in addictive behavior associated with gambling, working and computer usage can be observed and the discussion focus on the similarities between substance-related and non-substance-related dependence or "behavioral addiction". However, the high number of subjects searching for treatment emphasizes the importance of a clear conceptualization of the so called "behavioral addictions" and their successful treatment. This paper introduces into the phenomenological and clinical characteristics of "behavioral addictions" as well as into models of the development and maintenance of addictive behavior. Furthermore, critical issues of the current classifications as impulse control disorders and alternative classifications of the disorder are discussed. Finally, the specific characteristics of different forms of "behavioral addictions" (gambling, gaming, working, sex, and buying) are described. © ecomed Medizin, Verlagsgruppe Hüthig Jehle Rehm GmbH.
