Esophagitis occurs when the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus causes mucosal damage. Reflux of gastric contents causes inflammation, leading to mucosal injury. Esophagitis can be diagnosed visually on endoscopy or via esophageal sampling. The treatment of esophagitis requires decreasing the exposure of the distal esophagus to acidic or corrosive substances.
