Abstract

This chapter examines the challenges that researchers face when estimating prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders among Asian Americans, and provides recommendations for designing and implementing culturally valid epidemiological research. The discussion begins with an examination of the ideological and methodological challenges that have hampered prevalence research in Asian American communities. The authors use the Chinese American Psychiatric Epidemiological Study as a model to present strategies for (1) sampling small populations, (2) selecting and establishing culturally valid measures, and (3) encouraging community participation in research studies.
