Abstract

An investigation of child‐rearing practices among a stratified sample of households in an Indian town indicates that there are some significant differences in parent‐child behavior between lower socioeconomic status households and higher status ones. Certain economic factors are identified as affecting how adults handle children, and these are in turn related to differences in children's behavior. Some intra‐cultural diversity along one dimension, socioeconomic status, is demonstrated .
