Abstract

Noting that acculturation embodies the strategies of integration, assimilation, separation or segregation, & marginalization, data from the 1991 Canadian Census Public Use Microdata File are used to derive an index of acculturation based on a framework developed by John Berry (1997). The index is applied in a preliminary analysis of selected characteristics of immigrants (place of birth & mother tongue) to demonstrate its potential. 11 Tables, 1 Figure, 3 Appendixes, 30 References.
