Abstract

The methods of synthesis of fly ash zeolites, adopted by the previous researchers and those established by the authors of this handbook, yield by-products, as well. These by-products (containing alkaline liquid sludge containing considerable concentration of soluble Si and Al ions) require special attention both in terms of their handling, temporary storage and disposal. In this situation, efforts should be made to develop methodologies that would be effective in safe and environmentally friendly solutions to deal with the siliceous and aluminous enriched liquid wastes. One of the ways, to deal with this situation would be to utilize the liquid sludge coming out of the zeolitization process for sequential hydrothermal treatment so as to create a zero effluent process. Accordingly, this chapter deals with some potential areas for further research on the fly ash and alkali interaction.
