This article is a compilation of a symposium presented in 1993 at the 46th annual Meeting of the Society for Rangeland Management. The following topics were addressed: research needs to aid wise management of water resources; the future prospects for rangeland livestock research; an overview of riparian research; vegetation management; the potential for range/wildlife research in a changing society, and the role of social science in range management. Conclusions state that as a result of societal change, range management has changed and will change even more in the future. Research answers need to be provided for management activities that are defined as the art and science of optimizing goods and services from the land in combinations needed and desired by society. Management of the land must be seen as a common purpose. The commodities that might be produced should be perceived as the benefits of sustainability. -after Editor
