Abstract

Trigeminal neuralgia is an incapacitating and mysterious disease, which predominantly occurs in elderly patients. There are many controversies on its etiology, and treatment. Symptomatic Tic Doloreux has been linked to compression of the fifth nerve such as tumors or vascular anomalies, and multiple sclerosis, Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in pain medicine, due to its unknown etiology. Fifth nerve neuralgia clinical features are intense pain, which occurs in a paroxysmal nature, trigger by a myriad of provoking factors, and a negative physical examination. The clinical diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia is done easily. It has been recommended to perform a nuclear magnetic resonance in order to categorize the etiologic factor. Most patient response to anticonvulsant drugs, but there is a small group of cases that need invasive procedures.
