Abstract

In an effort to create successful digital libraries, UC Berkeley is researching on the following critical technologies: 1) fully automated indexing and intelligent retrieval, 2) database technology to support digital library applications, 3) a more effective protocol for client/server information retrieval, and 4) user interface technology appropriate for multimedia distributed systems. A prototype digital library is currently under development, which focuses on 'The California Environment.' The library will contain all the environmental technical reports for the State of California, supporting computer models, county general plans, aerial and ground photography, maps, videos and databases of the California biota.
