Abstract

Background: We are in a period where technology is a main driver of the direction of healthcare. Robots, computers, telecommunication, and information networks are changing the face of healthcare. This article aims to summarize current developments and outlook in telesurgery. Methods: Review of the literature. Results: There is no doubt, that in keeping with novel developments in telemedicine, surgery will become increasingly fascinating. Robotics and telesurgery will enable us to treat individuals in remote areas and battlefields. However, legal, humanistic, and ethical issues of these novel technologies have to be addressed for critical evaluation of telesurgery. Conclusions: Undoubtedly, telesurgery will profoundly change healthcare. However, novel developments have to be critically evaluated for future application of telemedicine. © Springer-Verlag 2005.
