A National Database on Coastal Dunes: Emilia-Romagna and Southern Veneto Littorals (Italy)

Abstract

This chapter describes the role of the coastal dunes in the context ofcoastal erosion and presents the possibility of making complex analyseson coastal dunes presence and state using a geodatabase, developedwithin a national research program. Data and parameters, such aslittoral uses, defenses and coastal dune features, have been organizedin the same geodatabase structure. This national homogeneous approachmakes this project unique for Southern Mediterranean coasts. Applyingthis approach to data gathered from the Emilia-Romagna and SouthernVeneto regions highlighted the complex analyses possibilities and theirimplication for coastal management and monitoring.
