Abstract

This chapter provides a discussion of school-based interventions aimed at treating youth with depression. The authors give an overview of depression in youth, including its clinical presentation in children and assessments that can be used to diagnose and monitor the disorder within the framework of a school setting. Also, the authors provide a review of school-based interventions with a focus on indicated programs. The ACTION program is one such school-based intervention, and the authors give a discussion of the treatment components involved in this program. Finally, this chapter covers issues related to transportability of cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) programs for youth into the schools, with a focus on school commitment, treatment parameters, environmental constraints, and training school staff.
