Abstract

SYNTHESIS OF MAGNETITE FROM BAUXITE RED-MUD TAILINGS USING CETYLTRIMETHYLAMMONIUM BROMIDE TEMPLATE . Red mud from bauxite tailings has a high composition of iron, which can be potentially utilized as a source of magnetite synthesis. In this paper, we reported the synthesis of magnetite from red-mud, which was carried out via co-precipitation method using NH4OH as precipitating agent. The cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) templates with a concentration of 0, 1, and 2 mM were used to control the distribution of particle size. Characterization was conducted using infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size analysis (PSA). The results showed the success of magnetite synthesis, which was confirmed by FTIR spectrum and XRD. The vibrations of the octahedral and tetrahedral Fe-O groups of magnetite were characterized by wave numbers of about 420 cm-1 and 550 cm-1, which were supported by XRD data at a 2? of 30.29; 36.15 and 63.55 indexed to (220), (311) and (440) planes, respectively. The PSA results revealed that increasing of CTAB concentration decreased the average of particle size, and the polydispersion index (PI) of the magnetite particles. This indicates an increase in the homogenity of the particle dispersion. However, the PI values were still relatively high (>1.68) which is probably due to agglomeration. This outcomes were confirmed by SEM results showing agglomeration in the surface morphology of the materials
