This review summarizes the numerous studies on the chemistry of molybdenum and rhenium octahedral chalcogenide cluster compounds carried out over the years at the Nikolaev Institute of Inorganic Chemistry in collaboration with international research groups. A pathway from classical solid-state cluster compounds Mo6Se8, Re6 Te15, and K4Re6S12, influenced by the French school of solid-state cluster chemistry, to soluble molecular complexes with Re6 Q8 and Mo6Q8 cluster cores is provided. Both inorganic and organic ligands can be grafted onto cluster cages, resulting in a drastic change in the charge and properties of such complexes.
