Numerous definitions of the mediterranean zone have been given; they originate in several disciplines. However, numerous biogeographical works converge on an essential principle: ‘Mediterraneaneity’ is a climatic phenomenon which must be analysed in physical terms. We have chosen to use the method of the late Professor Emberger. He proposed the basis of a new approach to the mediterranean climate; we pursue this project and we present here, not the final result of our work on mediterranean climates; but a stage in this research; a stage now well developed, which collates our own works with results acquired in other laboratories (U.R.B.T. of Algeria, Biological Institute of Ankara, the Faculties of Science of the Universities of Damascus, Aleppo(Nahal 1981) and Thessaloniki.
