Abstract

Renal transplantation is a highly successful therapeutic option for patients with end-stage renal disease. The current level of success has been the result of improvements in surgical technique, immunosuppression, organ preservation, and patient management. The number of patients needing transplantation continues to outgrow the supply of donor organs. The techniques described in this chapter highlight the surgical aspects of organ procurement and preservation. Although these techniques have led to improvement in transplantation, their application is inherently linked to the generous gift of organ donation. © 2006 Humana Press Inc.
