A new dynamic photometric stereo technique is presented, which facilitates the analysis of rapidly moving surfaces containing mixed two- and three-dimensional concomitant features. A new approach termed narrow infra-red photometric stereo (NIRPS) is described as an evolution of the existing photometric stereo (PS) technique. The method has application for the inspection of web materials and other moving surfaces considered difficult to analyse using conventional imaging techniques. Experimental results are presented in the paper. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
