We study some of the mathematical challenges presented by the need to support ensemble engineering, concentrating on likely contributions from category theory and universal algebra. Particular attention is paid to dealing with missing data, modelling dynamics and interaction, and analysing inconsistencies. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
