Abstract

A large number of scientific studies are devoted to the role of diet in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A significant proportion of patients associate the appearance of the IBS symptoms with the intake of certain foods. Many medical communities have recognized nutrition management as an important tool in treating the disease. The article discusses the existing dietary approaches in the management of patients with IBS based on generalized data available in the modern literature. An assessment of the nature and nutrition and identification of the most common types of food intolerance are considered as a “firstling” approach. When IBS symptoms persist, consideration should be given to applying extended recommendations such as a low-FODMAP diet. The purpose of the low-FODMAP diet is to sequentially identify specific triggers to control disease symptoms.
