This brief introduction overviews the content and analytical approach of the case studies presented in Chapters 5 – 8, which cite quantitative and qualitative responses to film and music extracts from the case study sequences that were gathered using questionnaires and focus groups. These data are presented alongside filmic, musical, and contextual analysis. This combination of information is used to explore various levels of textual engagement (e.g. production and reception) to gain a more holistic perspective of the (in)congruities in the sequences. This introduction outlines the ratings scales used in the questionnaires, the study participants, and the way in which data are reported. It emphasises that these data are not included to represent generalisable, idealised responses but to generate discussion about how individuals might interpret (in)congruities in the sequences.
