Abstract

In 1982 the International Astronomical Union established a commission (section) under the title IAU Commission 51 - Search for Extraterrestrial Life. The first IAU Symposium of Commission 51 was held in 1984. The paper reports investigations on dust envelopes, space telescopes, radio searches and the Fermi Paradox.
